About me
Dr. Gladys Barbosa Labas is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Southern Connecticut State University. As Coordinator of the Department’s Doctoral Program, she has been instrumental in the implementation of its Ed.D. Program that prepares students as they shift into scholarship and leadership and policy studies ahead in order to play a vital role in creating successful schools and school districts in the 21st century.
Dr. Labas was an urban administrator, a school principal at the Meriden PS, where she orchestrated the planning and management of a rigorous, standards-based school improvement plan and its application of high-quality teaching and learning for all students. She was also an Adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education where she taught graduate courses in multicultural bilingual education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction for a decade. Her research interests include coaching for leadership, professional learning, diversity and equity issues, bilingual program development and implementation, discourse analysis of bilinguals, effective leadership that promotes and sustains student achievement, quality teaching, and successful schools and districts, and effective learning environments for the ever-increasing diverse student population in the state.
Dr. Labas has published articles, chapters, teacher training manuals and guidebooks. She has presented research and training papers at state, regional and national conferences: the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the Arizona State University’s Equity Alliance, the National Association for Bilingual and Bicultural Education, the Paris International Conference on Education, the Brown University Research and Evaluation Center, and the University of Connecticut’s Round Table of Research in Bilingual Education. She is also an article reviewer for the Journal of Latinos and Education. Additionally, she has conducted state and national high school accreditations as chair and member for the State of Connecticut’s institutions of higher education. Has received the National Milken Leadership Award (first Latina in Connecticut), CT Association of School/ CIAC Recognition and NEASC Recognition Award.
